Cummins announces latest X15 capable of meeting MY2027 EPA regulations
48V electric heater provides early SCR warm-up to improve NOx conversion
Cummins has announced the next generation X15 diesel engine, as part of its HELMTM 15L fuel agnostic platform, offering ratings up to 605 hp / 2,050 lb-ft and meeting the MY 2027 EPA/CARB Low NOx regulations.
Some key developments are shown in the picture.
- Specifically for meeting the upcoming MY 2027 EPA Low NOx regulations, the engine uses a 48V system coupled with an after-treatment heater to address the cold start & low load NOx emissions.
- The fuel efficient “EX rating” includes use of predictive gear shifting, on-ramp boost and hill roll out
- See video that explains hill roll out
- Compatible with up to 20% biodiesel and 100% renewable diesel blends.
Thoughts
This is the first of many engines expected to be announced in the coming years that will be upgraded to meet the tough low NOx regulations as well as the upcoming GHG Phase 3 standards (to be finalized). It is instructive to see the approach taken by Cummins on the use of a 48-V heater. Other approaches include the use of a close-coupled SCR catalyst, while retaining the 48V system for mild hybridization.
