CO2 Emissions Performance of Heavy-Duty Vehicles in Europe - 2022 Results

The European Commission has published the official CO2 emission results reported for heavy-duty vehicles in Europe in 2022. The standards in Europe require a 15% reduction in CO2 emissions by 2025, compared to a 2019 baseline. As such, these interim values are not used for pass/fail but are indicative of how much work lies ahead for OEMs, by comparing against their “reduction trajectory” calculated each year.

The figure here shows the average CO2 emissions in 2022 reported for these vehicle manufacturers, and the comparison with their targets. DAF, MAN, Renault, Scania and Volvo Truck all reported emissions below their target and have gained CO2 credits, while the rest have more work to do.

Note that these figures are calculated using the VECTO tool, which has itself undergone a revision recently such that the emissions are lower by ~ 3% compared to those calculated using the previous version. We should expect that the final comparison in 2025 will be done using the same version, which will eliminate any numerical artifacts so introduced.
