New gasoline (petrol) engine developments discussed in 2022
This is a short graphic account of engine developments discussed at the Aachen and Vienna Motor Symposium conferences in 2022. A more extended description will be included in the annual SAE WCX 2023 review paper.
The common thread seems to be more emphasis on lowering engine out and tailpipe emissions to address upcoming emission standards – Euro 7, China 6b – in addition to pairing the engine with mild hybrid system for lower fuel consumption.
Common technology pathways include:
- High compression ratio
- Downsizing with optimized turbocharging for fast transient response
- Variable turbine geometry
- Miller cycle
- Direct injection at 350 bar, multiple injections at low speeds for lower PN
- l = 1 operation across most of the engine map
- Cylinder deactivation
- 48V mild hybridization
- TWC + GPF for gas and PN control
Not shown here, but also presented at Vienna was VW’s improvements in their latest 4-cylinder, 1.5L engines. Similar technologies were used – Miller cycle operation to enable CR increase from 10.5 to 12.0:1, lambda 1 operation across the entire engine map, 350 bar fuel injection system, cylinder deactivation optimized to enable operation in two-cylinder mode over a wider range, TWC and high filtration GPF, and engine paired with a mild hybrid powertrain.
