Summary of 2024 SAE Government Industry
Here is a summary of the 2024 SAE Government Industry meeting, held in Washington DC annually.
Two comments made on a panel discussion and a talk –
“The average US consumer does not buy the average car” – that is, the average priced car is typically bought by the relatively wealthy. And with the increasing price of vehicles with electrification, there is a risk of older, unsafe, and more polluting vehicles remaining in circulation for longer, an unintended effect with environmental injustice ramifications.
Secondly, on total cost of ownership (TCO): When was the last time you bought a car based on the TCO? While it makes perfect sense in economic terms to purchase a vehicle which costs lower over the lifetime, no one does that.
And for heavy-duty vehicles? Yes TCO is a critical metric – but for one thing parity with diesels is much further away despite incentives, and secondly, smaller fleets still care about upfront costs.
