Regional and Powertrain split
Here’s a summary of the 2022 light-duty vehicle sales based on data from EV-volumes – highly recommend a subscription if such information is of value (this is not a sponsored plug !)
Here “xHEV” or “Hybrid” includes all electrified hybrids – mild, full and plug-in hybrids.
Important Note: Overall global numbers below are slightly different that on the EV-volumes website, since data for some markets (with very low EV penetration) was not available when the plot below was made. As a result, actual BEV and PHEV share for 2022 were 9.5% and 3.5%, respectively.
Some takeaways
- In 2022, globally, ~1 out of every 10 cars sold was purely battery electric and 1 out of every 7 cars was a hybrid
- In all major markets, hybrids are at > 10% share (> 25% in Europe & Japan). Hybrids also gaining share in the US (12%)
- The total number of EVs (BEVs + PHEVs) on the road increased to 27 million by end of 2022, ~1.8% of total fleet of 1.5 billion vehicles globally.
